Lee Stole the Show
The sisters had spent their lives battling with one another, primarily for their father’s attention. Their feud lasted years, and nothing could stop it, not even a day dedicated to Jackie. Jackie had her coming-out ball in August of 1947. This is a formal celebration at which young women from upper-class households are welcomed into adulthood. Everyone else at this gathering wears cream-colored gowns, but Lee has different intentions. Even if the day was all about her sister, she wasn’t going to give her all of her attention. Lee arrived in a bright pink dress embellished with glittering rhinestones. Her strategy worked, and everyone stopped and stared. According to Vanity Fair, Lee “loved color, and she enjoyed being noticed.”

Anything to Gain Attention
Lee welcomed all forms of attention. She was thrilled regardless of the reason, as long as everyone was looking at her. When she reached 18, she and her sister embarked on a Grand Tour of Europe. This was a tour that upper-class young women frequently took in order to further their education and gain entry into elite society. Lee and Jackie spent their days and nights socializing with distinguished guests and diplomats. Then, as Lee stood in front of an ambassador, she felt something around her ankles. As she looked down, she noticed it was her underwear. She wanted all eyes on her, and they were!
