Lee and Michael Temple Canfield had an on-and-off romance for years. Not only was he devilishly attractive, but he also inherited a tiny publishing business money. He met all of Lee’s requirements, but there was more. Many suspected he was the Duke of Kent’s illegitimate love child with his mistress, Kiki Preston. Lee and Michael chose to marry while they were together. Their wedding took place on April 18, 1953, at her stepfather’s Merrywood home. As you can guess, it was every girl’s fantasy wedding, complete with beauty and glamor. Lee’s wedding was much more important for her because she had beaten her sister to marriage. Lee had just turned 20 years old and was eager to get married. She had done as her parents had told her: marry first and marry rich. However, her family had some doubts about the young couple’s union, which they couldn’t keep to themselves. They were certain the marriage wouldn’t endure, arguing that her new spouse would “never be able to afford her.” Despite her family’s misgivings and objections, Lee went ahead with the wedding.
