Each article seemed to be randomly chosen, rather than deliberately, and there was nothing noteworthy about their stories. There must have been something significant about these clippings, however, and the money was certainly old enough to entice collectors. Surely, they could make a killing out of this stack?

The enigma became all the more fascinating when Mary discovered that a large portion of these dollar bills was marked with little stars. A quick Google search revealed that these notes are known as “star bills”. In the event that a banknote is printed with some kind of defect, then the law surrounding American currency states that it cannot be reprinted. Then, a tiny star is stamped onto the serial number behind the note to allow its place as legal tender.
