Money wasn’t the only thing in the suitcase, however, and the couple could not be certain that they had mapped the situation out until it was completely cleared out. When they finally reached the base of the suitcase, they discovered a couple of ancient newspaper cutouts. The money was one thing, but finding a piece of evidence was exhilarating. They finally had something to indicate at least when this suitcase had been stashed and when the money was from.

Sam and Mary saw that the newspaper issue, which belonged to the Cleveland Plain Dealer, was dated 25 March 1951. The thrill of finding so much money gave way to a strange sense of mystery. The couple felt like it was connecting with the past in some distant and obscure manner. They had an idea that this suitcase and its contents were many decades old, but they finally had proof. Or so they thought, as this mystery was about to grow deeper.
