Whaling was once a globally booming industry up until the previous century that nearly wiped out numerous whale species. The blubber or fat of whales was used in a variety of other industries to create cosmetics and soap and machine and lamp oil. Leather was also processed with whale blubber. Every now and then, ambergris would be discovered within whale remains and sold for a huge price. The 80s finally brought the whaling industry to an end in many countries across the world and a ban was put on whale sourced animal products, ambergris included.

Whales don’t just produce ambergris in the same way that humans digest food. It is a years-long process that only around 1% of sperm whales in existence are even capable of. This gives a clear indication of how exceptionally rare the coveted whale product is. Even more incredibly, the majority of ambergris findings were done in the Atlantic Ocean and its connected beaches. Clearly, the Whittens had stumbled across a supremely fortunate thing that few people even know about.
