As if on cue, the elderly woman walked into the kitchen where others were at work. She gave them a warm welcome and engaged in reassuring chats with them. Henry was astonished to find his interest piqued by her tales, and for a brief moment he yearned to emerge from the shadows and speak with her. But a lot was at risk in this situation. He had to be tough.

The other cleaners left the room as Hannah entered the kitchen. With her hands on her hips, Hannah gave the woman a curt, “Well, hurry up,” remark. “Despicable,” she sneered. Her face twisted, and her voice was filled with disgust. She turned her head away as her eyes started to mist up. But she wiped them off and continued working.
